If you keep your thumb on the pulse of swimming pool news, you might have heard about a new regulation mandate from the U.S. Department of Energy. Well, the time for this mandate to come into effect is almost here. On July 19th, 2021, the Department of Energy will require all pool pumps of a certain horsepower rating to meet a new efficiency threshold.

The mandate is officially called the “Energy Conservation Standards for Dedicated-Purpose Pool Pumps”. This regulation will apply to all pool pumps and is the second regulation applicable to the swimming pool/spa industry. The other regulation pertained to efficiency standards for swimming pool heaters. You may be wondering what is going to change from this regulation coming into effect. Well, essentially, MOST single-speed pool pumps will no longer meet the federal standard. This is not the same benchmark requirement as the energy-star program that has helped inspire manufacturers to voluntarily engineer more energy-efficient pumps over the past decade. Now, these manufacturers are legally required to meet the standards set by the government. What kind of pumps will meet the new federal regulation threshold? The threshold is measured with a different system than traditional motor horsepower. The regulation states that self-priming filtration pumps rated between 0.711 and 2.5 “hydraulic” horsepower must meet the performance standard. Converted to motor horsepower, the regulation applies to motors between approximately 1 and 5 horsepower. So in recapping all of this information, responsibility for compliance falls on manufacturers NOT the customer. Dealer inventory and customer purchasing will not be directly affected. July 19, 2021, is the date non-compliant pumps will no longer be manufactured. After July 19, 2021, dealers can still buy the older pumps and install them, as long as they can find available inventory. Customers will not have to return the product.
